The flexible softcover, combined with threaded stitching and cloth headbands, ensures durability while remaining comfortable to carry.

The Smyth sewn binding allows the journal to open fully flat for smooth writing across both pages. Functional features include a back cover pouch for storing notes or keepsakes, a ribbon marker for quick page access and elegant edge printing that enhances the premium finish.

The Nocturnelle cover design is a reproduction of an antique French binding created in 1829 by A. & W. Galignani for The Poetical Works of Thomas Moore. This era marked a significant turning point in bookbinding, blending mechanized production with the artistic grandeur traditionally associated with handcrafted leather-bound volumes. The original binding, crafted in dark Moroccan leather with ornate gold tooling, displayed the meticulous structural detailing and decorative sophistication prized by 19th-century bibliophiles.

The design reflects architectural influences of the time, incorporating motifs such as spirals, rosettes and stylized leaves. These elements, together with deep tones and intricate ornamentation, give the Nocturnelle journal a rich, timeless aesthetic. The Galignani brothers, publishers known for their English-language reprints in Paris, produced this edition to honour Ireland’s National Bard, Thomas Moore, whose poetic works gained immense popularity during the early 1800s.
